About the Archdiocese of Sydney
A diocese is a portion of the people of God within a geographical area,
entrusted to the pastoral care of a Bishop (Cardinal
George Pell),
who is assisted in his ministry
by
auxiliary
bishops,
priests,
and
deacons. The diocese remains close to its pastor and is gathered by him through
the Gospel and the Eucharist in the Holy Spirit to constitute a particular
local church. In this Church, the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church
of Christ truly exists and functions. (cf. Code of Canon Law, 369)
The Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney exists to serve the People
of God in the city of Sydney, including the Eastern, Southern, inner-Western
and South-Western
suburbs and the suburbs of the lower-North Shore. What is the Vision and Mission of the Catholic Church in Sydney?
The vision and mission of the Catholic Church in Sydney is
the same for the Catholic Church Universal. It is the Church’s
mission to be a sign and instrument of communion with God and of unity
among
all people.
The first purpose of the Church is to be the sacrament of the inner
union of people with God. Because our communion with one another
is rooted in that union with God, the Church is also the sacrament of
the unity
of
the human race.
In
her, this unity has already begun, since she gathers all people “from
every nation, from all tribes and peoples and times”; at the same
time, the Church is the sign and instrument “of the full realisation
of the unity yet to come” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 775.) Who we are
