Sydney celebrates Pope John Paul II’s Silver Jubilee this Thursday

To commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Pope John Paul II on Thursday 16 October 2003 Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, will celebrate Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral at 7pm.

The Archdiocese of Sydney, in conjunction with the Society of Christ - an order of priests who minister to the Polish Community in Sydney, invites Catholics from parishes and migrant communities to mark this celebration in honour of Pope John Paul II.

After twenty-five years, the pontificate of John Paul II is the fourth longest in the history of the Papacy.

To begin the Silver Jubilee Mass, the entrance procession will feature representatives from many nations bearing 26 national flags, including the Polish, Vatican, Aboriginal and Australian flags. Representatives from the following communities will be present, many in national costume:

Belgian
Burmese
Chaldean (Iraqi)
Chinese
Croatian
Czech
Egyptian
Filipino
French
German
Indonesian
Irish
Italian
Korean
Maltese
Polish
Portugese
Samoan
Slovakian
Spanish
Syrian
Tongan
Vietnamese
Cardinal George Pell will preside at this Mass, his last public appearance before leaving for the Consistory in Rome.
