The Archdiocese of Sydney launches a Catholic Women’s Database today

By Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney

15 December 2003

The Archdiocese of Sydney today launched a database of Catholic Women, detailing names, addresses, qualifications, experience and talents. The database of Catholic women was requested by many participants during the research phase leading to Woman and Man: One in Christ Jesus and this proposal was supported by the bishops of Australia. The aim of the Archdiocese of Sydney in establishing the Database is to provide a resource for the Archbishop and Archdiocese to draw upon in the work of evangelisation.

By taking part in the project, Catholic women express a desire to contribute to this work in Sydney. In recommending the project Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, encouraged all women to take part in the project. “Beginning with Mary Magdalene, who was the first to proclaim the Resurrection, women have played a decisive role in the work of evangelisation throughout history. This task, and the need for women to play their part in it, is no less urgent today.

“This project is about finding new ways of encouraging Catholic women to renew their commitment to meeting this challenge. I also hope it will assist in helping people to appreciate the depth and breadth of talents women contribute to the ongoing mission of the Church.

“This database will become an important resource for the Archdiocese in its efforts to facilitate the participation of women in the Church and I commend it to the women of Sydney.”

By becoming part of the project, women may be contacted about participating in various committees, activities and organisations. The needs of the Archbishop and the Archdiocese vary and the particular experiences and skills of Catholic women will be called upon as required. That these talents have been made available to the Church in Sydney will greatly assist in fulfilling these needs as they arise.

The Catholic Women’s Database will be administered by Catholic Communications on behalf of the Archdiocese. The Database website may be found at www.cathcomm.org/women or women may choose to complete the forms off-line. Printed copies of the questionnaire are available from the Catholic Women’s League, Level 8, 133 Liverpool Street, Sydney.
