2 million blooms at the Festival of Flowers, St Mary’s Cathedral Sydney12-15 September 2003 By CATHOLIC ARCHDIOCESE OF SYDNEY Governor of New South Wales, Professor Marie Bashir AC will open the Festival at St Mary’s Cathedral at 11.30am on Friday 12 September 2003. Archbishop George Pell will also be present. This year marks the bicentenary of the first official religious service to the Catholic community promulgated by the Governor of New South Wales in 1803, and visitors to the Flower Festival are invited to view an exhibition of memorabilia from the past 200 years in the Crypt of St Mary’s Cathedral. The Flower Festival is only held every three to fours years and is a terrific visual feast. The Festival was founded by Dame Monica Gallagher DBE as a prelude to Australia’s bicentenary celebrations. General information Opening Hours: Friday 12 - Sunday 14 September, 10am - 5pm; and Monday 15 September, 10am - 3pm. Admission $8 Various organisations, Church groups, Business Houses, Embassies and individuals are among those who contribute to over 100 arrangements . There will be a special category called “Memory Lane” where people have organised an arrangement in memory of a deceased family member or friend. During the four days of the festival musical items will be presented for the enjoyment of those attending. These include Bands, Choirs and Soloists etc. Previous Festivals of Flowers have been held in 1987, 1990, 1993, 1996 and 1999. Refreshments will be available on Saturday and Sunday.
