Catholics gather to remember victims of terrorist attacks

By Catholic Communications, Sydney Archdiocese

10 September 2004

Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, will celebrate a special Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral on Tuesday 14 September 2004 in remembrance of all the victims of terror attacks.

Mass will be celebrated in St Mary’s Cathedral on Tuesday 14 September 2004 at 1.10pm.

Cardinal Pell says “The threat of terrorism seems to have become part of our daily lives in the twenty-first century. In recent years we have witnessed the loss of life in the United States on September 11, 2001, and mourned those tragically killed in Bali in October 2002. In recent weeks we have watched in horror as children were brutally killed in Beslan, and this week we see the tragic results of the bomb detonated in Jakarta.

“We give thanks for those who have survived, and remember in our prayers those who have lost family and friends, that they will be comforted. We ask God to protect those who care for the injured, those in health professions, our defence and police forces, and all those who work for peace.

“At Mass we will pray for peace, in our world, in our country, in our homes and in our hearts. We pray for unity of all peoples.”

Prayers will be offered at weekend masses at St Mary’s Cathedral and parishes right across Sydney.

All media are invited to attend.
