Masses Celebrated this weekend for Victims of Asia Earthquake

By Catholic Communications, Sydney Archdiocese

1 January 2005

All Masses celebrated this weekend at St Mary´s Cathedral will be celebrated in commemoration of the victims of the Asia earthquake.

A special collection will be taken up at each of the Masses, and the proceeds given to Caritas Australia to provide water, sanitation, food, shelter and medicines for those affected by the earthquake.

Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, says “This is a tragedy of mammoth proportions. Our hearts and prayers go to those who have lost loved ones, those who are still searching for family and friends and those who have lost their homes and all their possessions.

“I invite the people of Sydney to take a little time to speak to God, praying for our neighbours in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka , the Maldives and South India, as well as to give practical assistance through monetary donations for the victims who are most in need.’

Masses at St Mary´s Cathedral will be celebrated:

            Saturday 1 January 2005: 6.00pm
            Sunday 2 January 2005: 7.00am, 9.00am, 10.30am (Solemn Sung Mass), 6.00pm

Information on how to donate to Caritas as well as liturgical materials (prayers of the faithful etc) can be found on the Caritas website, www.caritas.org.au
