Mt Pritchard Kids Can’t WaitBy Catholic Communications, Sydney Archdiocese
19 May 2005 Bishop Anthony Fisher visited Our Lady of Mt Carmel at Mt Pritchard to meet with the Year Six children who are candidates for Confirmation at the SuperDome this year. Some of the children’s comments show the depth of their feeling about the opportunity to be confirmed in a huge ceremony at the SuperDome. Tu An says “I think having the Confirmation at the SuperDome is very great. I feel very special to be one of the children to make my Confirmation at the SuperDome. I feel very lucky that our school is able to make our Confirmation there. And having the Bishop come and talk was very great.” Dylan says “I think that having my Confirmation at the SuperDome is pretty cool, but at the same time thinking about it makes me nervous because I will be standing and being confirmed in front of thousands of people. It is a rare opportunity to be confirmed in the SuperDome…maybe this in the last time.” Veronica says it was a great honour to meet Bishop Fisher. “We learnt a lot and he told us about Confirmation. He answered our questions and we had our picture taken with him. I had a great time in the Church! “I feel very lucky about having my Confirmation at the Sydney SuperDome. It only happens a few times. Actually, we are the second grade to go. It will be a good time seeing people from different schools!” Sarah said it was a great experience meeting the Bishop, both for herself and her classmates. “It was really cool!! Having confirmation at the SuperDome will be really good. It’s the second time it has happened, so I’m really lucky! Delana also liked Bishop Fisher, saying he was kind and gentle. “I felt really excited when Bishop Anthony arrived at my school. He was a kind and gentle man because he let us look at the crook and smell the chrism oil. I am really looking forward to going to the SuperDome to have my Confirmation. I’m a little nervous and excited too because I have never been to a place where there are 2000 children being confirmed.”
Roy is feeling “excited, anxious and nervous” but concludes that “I would get a good experience from this”. And it isn’t just the children looking forward to Confirmation 2005. The Religious Education Coordinators at Our Lady of Mt Carmel remember the ceremony of 2000 and are anticipating a similarly uplifting experience this year. “Our memories of the last Confirmation held at the SuperDome, in the Year of Jubilee, of a Spirit-filled Liturgy, are still vivid in our minds. We are looking forward to Confirmation this year, in the Year of the Eucharist, when people will once again be united as one and get a sense of what it means to be Catholic.”
