Sydney Catholics to commemorate First Anniversary of Death of Pope John Paul II

Catholics across Sydney will remember the late Pope John Paul II on the occasion of the first anniversary of his death this Sunday 2 April 2006.
 
The official commemoration Mass at St Mary's Cathedral will be celebrated by Bishop Julian Porteous, Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney, at 6pm on Sunday evening. Special prayers will also be offered earlier in the day at the 10.30am Mass.
 
Bishop Porteous says, "Pope John Paul II has left his mark on this generation. His influence on world events as well as the direction of the Catholic Church has been great. For young people he has been a beacon of light and a source of hope."
 
Throughout the day people wishing to pray or reflect on the life of Pope John Paul II are invited to visit St Mary's Cathedral and the prayer space set up in his honour (entry from College St).

TIME: 10.30am Mass; Cathedral open all day until official commemoration at 6.00pm Mass
