Sydney’s Catholics Walk with Christ on YouTubeBy Catholic Communications, Sydney Archdiocese In a first to attract net-savvy Catholics to Sydney’s annual Procession of the Blessed Sacrament, footage from Rome and Sydney has been uploaded to YouTube.com (search: Walk with Christ Sydney)Sydney’s youth are expected to participate in large numbers in the lead-up to World Youth Day 2008.
This year on Sunday 10 June, the Procession will start at St Patrick's Church Hill Wynyard, wind through the CBD, and conclude in Hyde Park.
Final prayers with Cardinal Pell and the Bishops of Sydney will be held at the northern end of Hyde Park, opposite St Mary’s Cathedral.
The event celebrates the mystery of the Eucharist, the greatest treasure of the Catholic faith, on the Feast Day of Corpus Christi.
Last year the colourful Procession attracted over 10,000 Catholics from across the State, and a greater number is expected this year.
Brett Vellos, 23, attended last year and will be there again on 10 June.
“I want to share my faith. No matter where we are, who we are and the differences we hold in our experiences, our faith in Jesus is what brings us together – I greatly value the gift of being part of this family of Catholics”.
Pope John Paul II revived the tradition of the Eucharistic Procession in 1979. Pope Benedict XVI has continued the tradition, and in 2006 led over 50,000 Catholics from St. John at the Lateran Basilica to St. Mary Major Basilica, in Rome.
