Address to 300,000 Youth attending the ‘Agora’ Youth Day celebrations in Loreto

Cari ragazzi e ragazze d’Italia,

vi saluto a nome di tutti i giovani australiani. E’ una gioia per me essere qui a Loreto e poter condividere con voi la ricchezza di colori e di fede di quest’incontro, a due passi da uno dei grandi santuari del mondo.

Avete appena visto alcune immagini di Sydney e dell’Australia. Immagini di una terra bella e antica, assieme a quelle di una città moderna e vivace. Immagini di gente proveniente da ogni parte del mondo – che vi attende a braccia aperte. Gente che, proprio come voi, ha sete della Parola del Vangelo.

Sono qui oggi per invitarvi, con il mio strano accento australiano, a prendere parte a quest’avventuroso viaggio spirituale e geografico: venite a Sydney come testimoni di fede. Immaginatevi protagonisti della Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù di Sydney 2008. Abbiamo già preparato un posto per ognuno di voi!
 
Il tema che il Santo Padre ci ha dato per la GMG di Sydney è: “Avrete forza dallo Spirito Santo che scenderà su di voi e mi sarete testimoni” – testimoni fino ai confini del mondo. Gesù vi invita ad uscire dal vostro mondo quotidiano - con lui e per lui. Partite alla ricerca di qualcosa di più grande. Sydney sembra molto lontana, in realtà di mezzo c’è solo una “bella dormita”!

Se oggi decidete di cominciare a lavorare, risparmiare, per a partire per questo grande viaggio nella fede, sono certo che Nostro Signore manterrà la promessa fatta ad ognuno di voi. Lui vi darà la forza per essere Suoi testimoni, anche ai confini del mondo. 
 
I giorni scorsi avete avuto modo di incontrare e stare assieme a giovani provenienti dalle altre diocesi, così come in Australia i giovani si stanno incontrando per prepararsi ad accogliervi nelle loro case, nelle loro vite, nei loro cuori. Vogliamo proprio che veniate a condividere con noi la fede e l’esuberanza che solo gli italiani sanno portare!

Sono venuto qui con un gruppo di 15 giovani australiani che come me sono venuti per invitarvi personalmente ad unirvi a noi per quello che sarà un incontro indimenticabile con il Santo Padre, con tutti i giovani dell’Australia, dell’Oceania e del mondo .

Dalla terra dei canguri e dei koala, dalla terra del sole e del mare, vi invitiamo a venire!

Venite nella terra su cui splende la Croce del Sud, la terra della Beata Mary MacKillop… venite…

Venite nella Grande Terra del Sud dello Spirito Santo!

Dear young people of Italy,

I greet you on behalf of all the young people of Australia. It is wonderful to be here and to share this colourful and faithful encounter with you here in Loreto, so close to one of the great shrines of the world.

You have seen before you on the screen images of Sydney and of Australia. Images of an ancient and beautiful land and a modern and exciting city. People from every nation on earth – with arms wide open for you. People, just like you, hungry for the message of the Gospel.

I am here today, speaking with my strange Australian accent, to invite you to join this spiritual and geographic adventure and come to Sydney as witnesses of faith. Place yourself in those pictures of the great World Youth Day that will occur from 15-20 July 2008 in Sydney. We have a space especially reserved for you!

The theme given us by the Holy Father for the World Youth Day in Sydney is: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses” – witnesses to the very ends of the earth. Jesus invites you to step out of your familiar world with him and for him. To go on a great quest. Sydney might seem very far away for you. Actually it is only one sleep away! If you decide, today, to work and save and prepare spiritually to embark on this great journey in faith, I know that Our Lord will fulfil His promise to each one of you. He will give you power through His Holy Spirit and you will be His witnesses – even to the ends of the earth.

You have been meeting together in your diocesan gatherings over the past few days here in Loreto, and in Australia the young people of every diocese are also meeting, preparing to welcome you into their homes, their lives and their hearts. We want you to share with us that faith and exuberance that only Italians can bring!

I have come here with a delegation of 16 young Australians who have personally come to invite you to join us for what will be an unforgettable encounter with the Holy Father, with the young people of Australia, of Oceania and of the world.

To the land of the kangaroo and the koala, of the sun and the sea,

we invite you to come!

To the land of the Southern Cross in the sky, of Our Lady Help of Christians, of Blessed Mary MacKillop, we invite you to come!

To the Great South Land of the Holy Spirit, we invite you to come!
