Bishop Julian PorteousMost Rev Julian Porteous BTheol DD VG was born in Sydney on 5th June 1949 and baptised in Rose Bay Parish. Bishop Porteous is the eldest of five children, and has two brothers and two sisters.

Crest of Bishop Porteous - Grace and TruthHe completed his primary education in Melbourne, Singapore and Parramatta, and undertook secondary schooling with the De La Salle Brothers at Oakhill College, Castle Hill. He entered St Columba’s Seminary, Springwood in 1968 and then continued studies for the priesthood at St Patrick’s College, Manly from 1971. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Sydney on 7th September, 1974.

Bishop Porteous served as Assistant Priest in the parishes of Kingsgrove, Manly, The Entrance, Woy Woy, and Mona Vale. In 1996 he was appointed Administrator of the Parish of Annandale and then Parish Priest of Dulwich Hill in 1999.

Bishop Porteous has been actively involved in evangelisation and in the development of ecclesial movements in Australia. Through his involvement with these communities he has worked in the formation of young people for consecrated life.

His recreational interests are long range walking, swimming, tennis, and following the Wallabies.

Bishop Porteous was appointed Rector of the Seminary of the Good Shepherd, Sydney in January 2002, and continues in this role after his Episcopal ordination on 3 September 2003.

He has been assigned the titular See of Urusi (Northern Africa).
