Welfare Services – Counselling
Institute of Counselling
The Institute of Counselling has existed under the auspices of the Archdiocese
of Sydney since 1971. It offers courses in counselling to the community as
a whole. Clergy, pastoral workers, teachers, nurses, and many other
shave benefited
from these courses.
The Institute of Counselling in Sydney is a self-funding, not-for-profit
Adult Education Centre which operates from the Australian
Catholic University Campus
in Strathfield. Its office is based in Willoughby.
The Institute was established in 1970 to provide part-time courses in counselling
and interpersonal
skills for people in the community who come into contact with people in crisis
or difficulty. It has
continued to specialise and only offers courses in counselling and group
facilitation
All courses are accredited by the NSW Vocational and Educational Training
and Accreditation Board [VETAB] and the Institute is also an Accredited Training
Organisation with the same Board.
Courses are Part-time, held on Thursday evenings during University semesters.
Some Saturdays and weekends are also involved.
- STUDENTS are usually mature age and come from all walks of life.
PHILOSOPHY
- The Institute believes there are core components in human
development and interpersonal skills which provide the foundation
for counselling practice.
These components are integral to the courses offered. The Institute
aims to give students a range of approaches to counselling from
which they are
encouraged
to choose specific areas to study in greater depth. It also gives
students considerable
practice in focusing on their own interpersonal skills.
